Northwich Market, Cheshire

Client: Cheshire West & Chester Council

Architect: AHR

Duration: 19 weeks

Value: £1.5m

Northwich Market has a brand new home at Barons Quay. Sixty years after it first opened, Medlock has delivered the fit-out to create a modern market hall for Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The project gives Northwich Market, an institution in the town for over 60 years, a prime new location and brings together independent traders, food and drink plus a fully accessible social space in the heart of the town centre.

Working from an empty shell unit on the Barons Quay development, our 19-week programme delivered the complete commercial fit-out of the new market hall. Works included the construction of 19 internal stalls and a large seating and social area, updates to the façade including new cladding and bifold doors, and the creation of new public toilets, back-of-house areas and drainage throughout.

A thoughtful touch to the project was the careful restoration of the original 'Indoor Market' sign from the former Northwich Market, now displayed prominently above the main seating area. The detail connects the new hall to the market generations of Northwich locals grew up with, lending the space an authenticity that a brand new fit-out alone couldn't provide.

The completed market hall provides 19 stalls offering a mix of food and drink, local produce and goods and services, alongside a welcoming social space where visitors can meet, sit and spend time together.

This project builds on our growing experience delivering market halls across the UK, including Chester Market for the same client, as well as Produce Hall Stockport and Southport Market Hall - each now a thriving social hub for its community.
