60 Years On, Northwich Market Opens In Its New Home

Northwich Market has been a part of this Cheshire town’s life for 60 years. But after the loss of the outdoor market and planned demolition of Weaver Square, the market needed a new home.

With its new doors opening mid-September, Northwich Market is now located in the heart of Barons Quay shopping centre.

Delivered for Cheshire West and Chester Council, the specialist fit out of the empty unit has created a prime spot for people to shop, meet and eat.

New market hall, new local favourite

The council relocated the market to Unit 13 at Barons Quay, an existing shell unit on a great corner plot of the development. The move puts independent traders alongside the town centre's other shops with plenty of footfall passing the door.

Inside, the 19 stalls offer a mix of food and drink, local produce and goods and services. The market is a fully accessible social space where visitors can sit down, meet friends and enjoy their time.

A nod to the old market

At the top of the main seating area is the 'Indoor Market' sign from the original Northwich Market. After 60 years of wear and tear, we carefully restored the sign so it could take pride of place in the new hall.

It's a small touch, but it links the new market to the one generations of Northwich locals grew up with.

What Medlock delivered

Over a 19 week programme, we fitted out the shell to create the multi-stall market hall. The £1.5m project included:

  • Construction of 19 internal stalls and large seating and social area

  • Updates to the façade including new cladding and bifold doors

  • Creation of bew public toilets, back-of-house areas and drainage

Building on our market hall experience

The project builds on our experience delivering market halls across the UK, including Chester Market for Cheshire West and Chester Council, as well as Produce Hall Stockport and Southport Market Hall. Each has become a social hub for its town, and Northwich now has its own.

We'd like to thank the council and everyone involved for making it happen. We look forward to working with Cheshire West and Chester Council again and we'll definitely be popping in for a coffee and a bite to eat at the new market.
