Mowgli Adds Spice To Newcastle Food Scene

After more than five years sitting empty, the iconic Grade II listed former Café Royal building on Nelson Street has found a new life as Mowgli's latest Newcastle venue - and locals are loving it.

The Indian street food brand, founded by TV chef Nisha Katona in 2014, has transformed the historic structure into their 26th UK location. The additions brings authentic street food to the heart of Newcastle in the building that sits just south of the Tyne Bridge.

Heritage meets street food

The renovation preserves the building's grandeur whilst creating the vibrant atmosphere Mowgli is known for. Grand columns welcome guests into a space that evokes historic Calcutta, complete with the brand's signature swing seating, atmospheric jailhouse dining areas and fairy lights to create a warm and cosy interior.

Working within the Grade II listed constraints required careful balance between heritage preservation and modern restaurant operations. The 96 cover venue spans both floors, each designed to immerse diners in Mowgli's distinctive street food experience.

Since opening in March, the venue has been drawing crowds keen to experience Nisha Katona's vibrant take on Indian street food. Popular dishes include the famous Fenugreek Fries, Mother Butter Chicken and Mowgli Paneer.

The Newcastle opening represents another strategic location for Mowgli's UK expansion, bringing the brand to a key regional city with a strong appetite for quality dining experiences.
